As I mentioned, it's been a rough few weeks. I'm exhausted. Today we went to a play, and then met a friend of Cindy's for pizza.

Before we left, I asked her what time we had to leave. She said "the play starts at 3:00." Ogod, I have to do math and estimating.

"What kind of pizza should we get?" "I don't care." "But..." "Just don't get mushrooms." Not the kind of decision I was wanting to make at that point.

Her friend was very talkative, and I was grateful since I had nothing to say. It was taking a good portion of my energy to stay attentive.

Soul food from a tropical island, made fresh in the capital.

Whenever we find ourselves in the vicinity of Tokyo Station, there’s one place we always visit, and its name is Potama. A cute amalgamation of the words “Pork” and “Tamago” (“Egg”), this specialty rice ball store has 11 branches throughout Japan, and only one in the entire Kansai region in and around Tokyo, located in Tokyo Midtown Yaesu.

This branch of the hugely popular Okinawa-born chain opened in 2022, bringing its unusual brand of rice balls to curious Tokyoites hungry for a taste of something new.

▼ The store is located in the underground mall area directly connected to JR East Tokyo Station, making it a convenient stop for travellers.

While everything in the underground mall might look new and shiny to overseas visitors, it takes a lot to turn the heads of a local traveller. Potama, however, does exactly that, as the pork tamago onigiri is a hard-to-get local specialty of Okinawa, an island so far from the mainland it can only be accessed by plane.

▼ While pork and egg is at the heart of the rice balls sold here, they come with extra toppings, like shrimp and tartar sauce, which we ordered.

Once you try an onigiri from Potama you’ll be hooked on the delicious taste of fluffy egg…and thick pork luncheon meat. Okinawa is famous for its love of Spam, and this rice ball embraces that love wholeheartedly, serving it up in a way that’ll remind you how good luncheon meat truly is.

▼ We’ve tried a lot of the items on the menu, but the one we keep going back to time and time again is the Shrimp Tartar, which costs 680 yen (US$4.36).

The crunch of the fried shrimp provides a gorgeous contrast to the smoothness of the pork and egg , while the tartar sauce adds a fantastic tang that leaves you with a delightfully refreshing aftertaste. According to the official website, this tartar sauce is a Potama original that contains the juice of shikwasa, a citrus fruit representative of Okinawa.

Wrapping your mouth around the delicious onigiri is like biting into an extravagant feast of flavours, leaving you  perfectly satisfied afterwards and making it great value for money. Although the store has an eat-in space, you can also order it to take home with you, and surprisingly, it tastes just as good cold as it does hot, which is a testament to its greatness.

The only thing you have to be careful about when stopping by Potama is the time, as orders are made fresh so you might have to wait around 15 minutes. The wait is worth it, though, as you’ll be able to get a taste of Okinawa’s famous soul food without having to fly to the island…although if you do make it there, you’ll find many other things to tempt you aside from the rice balls.

Broadchurch

Hey, all -- while I was searching for movies/TV shows in the same vein as the Donald Strachey Mysteries (didn't find any), I came across a TV series (London Spy) that was on a streaming service I've never heard of before, called Xumo Play. And guess what I found while I was browsing?

Broadchurch! Back when I watched it a year or so ago, I could only see the first season (without paying for Britbox). Now this site has all three! I'm very happy to have stumbled across it. Can't wait to watch the rest of it.

Broadchurch | Xumo Play

London Spy was okay, I guess. I've only seen the first episode so far. Now I'm much more excited about Broadchurch.

Has anyone ever heard of Xumo?

deadfall [ded-fawl]

noun:
1 a trap so constructed that a weight (such as a heavy log) falls on an animal and kills or disables it
2 a mass of brush and fallen fall trees

Examples:

Deadfall is a particularly thorny problem, and the club’s latter-day lumberjacks head out with chain saws in tow to remove trees upward of 4 feet in diameter. (Gregory Scruggs, 'Labor of love' motivates scrappy nordic ski club in North Cascades, The Seattle Times, December 2023)

The three sticks should be perfectly straight, and about the same diameter and length. Finger-thick and one-foot long will work for most deadfall triggers. (Tim MacWelch, A Guide to the 15 Best Survival Traps of All Time, Outdoor Life, October 2019)

If you happen to wander off trail on a hike, navigating over and under the debris, known as deadfall, proves to be a challenge in daylight, but imagine facing that challenge in the dark. (Meagan Thompson, Treasure hunter is rescued in the mountains south of Butte, KXLF, November 2025)

Winding roads diving deep between steep hillsides littered with jagged deadfall and boulder-size talus, towns few and far between. (C C Weiss, Review: Micro-camping the Idaho wilds in Escapod's monocoque teardrop, New Atlas, December 2024)

Then, a video demonstrating an ancient deadfall trap received over a million views. (Oliver Whang, Is There an Ethical Way to Kill Rats? Should We Even Ask?, New York Times, February 2023)

We hauled some deadfall from these woods to the center of the meadow where we built up around our camp a sort of circular fence. (David Zindell, The Lightstone)

Origin:
The earliest known use of the noun deadfall is in the late 1500s. OED's earliest evidence for deadfall is from before 1589, in the writing of Leonard Mascall, translator and author. (Oxford English Dictionary)

Taking my shot

So along the lines of you miss 100% of the shots you don't take, I'm sending in my Overlook story in a few minutes as soon as the submission form opens. I had thought I'd titled and formatted this and had a cover letter.

I didn't.

I searched everywhere but all I had was the edited copy but nothing else.

Huh. Mentally breaking the lenten promise of not talking bad about myself.

So no science saturday today because I had to spend hours, formatting, title conjuring (which I hate and I was SURE I had a title for this and that ELD had liked it but neither of us remembered what that was) and making the cover letter.

Weirder, the online places I saved for this no longer had links to the form. To the open call yes but only as a secondary source. I KNOW I had the link to the main source. I did finally find it googling around but damn. It's like this is cursed.

I know I don't have much of a shot not with all the big name horror in this thing already but there is a tiny chance and I'm taking my shot. Say a little wish for luck for me. thanks

Otherwise today was...disappointing because it was beautiful and I wanted to hike and had no one to go with so I didn't (to be fair to myself it would have been insanely crowded) Heck even Jackson was so crowded I had to cut thru housing plans just to keep moving to where I needed to be.

Mom sensed I was depressed today (and funnily enough she had sent me a witches ball set in Weirton this coming October)

Also had a weird dream that my former coworker L was yelling at me for not picking up my phone and I said it was off and I didn't realize it. Why? Your mother keeps calling me. Your father is in a coma. Mom doesn't have L's number and dad is fine just fyi. Thanks for more nightmares brain
